Shark Shield is an electronic shark deterent that creates an "exclusion zone" around the kayak, diver, swimmer. Take a look at the Shark Shield link in the ad headers on the BBS Page.
The "Triangle" is a sharky area mapped around the Farralons and the Pacific Coast that includes Sonoma. Fishing lobbyist Randy Frye had his head bit off nearly four years ago while ab diving a little north of here near Fort Bragg. That was the last CA fatality.
This is not a kayak fishing issue. I do believe though that the more time we spend OTW, the more important it is to have a lot of safety equipment like phone, radio, emergency blanket crazy glue and more. I put the Shark Shield on my boat with a big plan to fish the salmon. With salmon closed this season, I'll be fishing the mouth of Tomales and Bodega Bays for halibut. These are historically sharky areas. I won't give it a second thought with the Shield deployed. And I'll fish often.
I had a white shark to my boat at la Bufadora once. Talked myself into believing it was a big mola mola fin and stopped to fish a few minutes. Trout begs to differ. Once at Zuma (Westward), eight seals jumped out of the water and screamed as the whole rookery followed them to the Point...leaving me looking around quite alone. I called it a day and paddled in.
